HILLSDALE COLLEGE
Originally founded by Freewill Baptists as Michigan Central College in Spring Arbor, Michigan, classes began in December, 1844. The school moved to Hillsdale in 1853 and became Hillsdale College.
Although established by Freewill Baptists, the College is officially non-denominational. The College emphasizes "the importance of the common moral truths that bind all Americans, while recognizing the importance of religion for the maintenance of a free society."
Hillsdale was the first American college to prohibit all discrimination based on race, religion, or sex in its charter. Through this principle of equality, Hillsdale promoted the abolition of slavery and the education of Negroes during the mid 1800's. Black students were admitted immediately after the 1844 founding. In 1955, the football team refused its invitation to the Tangerine Bowl because the event organizers would not let Hillsdale's black students play. The College was also the second American school to grant four-year liberal arts degrees to women.
Now a Division II School in the GLIAC Conference, Hillsdale College has an outstanding athletic department with competitive teams in Men's Baseball, Basketball, Cross Country, Football, Golf, Tennis, and Track. Plus Women's Basketball, Cross Country, Softball, Swimming, Tennis, Track, and Volleyball. The Hillsdale Charger Football team won the NAIA National Championship in 1985.
Hillsdale College offers Liberal Arts degrees for Traditional Major Studies, Interdisciplinary Majors, and Pre-Professional Programs.
