Movie Review: Parental Guidance ***

“Parental Guidance” is a comedy about modern vs. old school parenting techniques starring Billy Crystal, Bette Midler, and Marisa Tomei. Young hip cutting-edge parents need to leave town and have no choice but to ask the least favorite grandparents to watch over 3 young children for a week. Instructions on how to parent modern-day children are met with surprise and amusing circumstances. The new methods do not work for these older people so they resort to doing things their own way to the surprise of the returning parents.

The movie is pretty lame with great actors delivering less than stellar lines, funny events falling short, and predictable scenes lacking flavor. I was prepared to give it just 1 out of 5 stars, but the ending is pretty darn good and boosted my rating to 3 out of 5 stars. I like a happy ending and don’t mind shedding a few tears at appropriate times. The movie finally delivered in the last 20 minutes. Memorable scenes include the doo-wop duet and “the doody song”. There is a very brief scene after the credits roll, so if you have the time, it resurrects a very funny and memorable part of the movie.
