Hillsdale County Fair Week

White building with slogan "the most popular fair on earth" organized 1850The Hillsdale County Fair has always been dubbed “The Most Popular Fair on Earth” and has been an annual event in Hillsdale since 1850. It is the last fair of the year in the state of Michigan. Folks get so excited about fair week that business people go there for lunch, kids get days off of school to show their animals, and families go there multiple times to make it an educational, entertaining, and gastronomical experience. The fair begins on Sunday, September 23 and runs until Saturday, September 29. Munro House has reduced rates for people who come to town and spend 2 nights during this very popular event. Fair week features the lowest prices of the Fall season. The leaves are starting to change. The nights are crisp and the days have been warm and dry. We are hoping for more of the same until the end of the month. It would be great if Mother Nature would comply with our wishes.

The buildings are always well-attended, whether they are occupied by food vendors, merchants, prize-winners, or animals. The grandstands bring in hundreds of fans to watch live entertainment including tractor pulls, monster trucks, demolition derbies, and rodeo. Everybody has their “go to” food stand. Foot-long hot dogs, deep fried cheesecake, elephant ears, and Fiske Fries are local favorites. 4-H members have raised their animals from birth and now make sure they are perfectly groomed to help earn a valuable ribbon. Local merchants feature what’s new in their area of expertise. The band shell and the Woman’s Congress building have free live entertainment all day long.

Our fingers are always crossed hoping for dry, pleasant weather for the entire week. Come for the food, come for the animals, or come for the entertainment. This fair is made popular by the residents of Hillsdale County who gather here year after year for a fun time with friends and family.
